For Immediate Release: Manslaughter/Child Abuse

On January 19, 2025, at approximately 2353 hours, Paradise Police Officers, Cal Fire, and Butte EMS Personnel responded to the 800 block of Violet Way on the report of a 5-month-old baby not breathing.  PPD officers arrived on scene and began life saving measures.  Cal Fire and Butte EMS personnel arrived on scene and took over medical care.  Unfortunately, life saving measures did not work and the baby was pronounced deceased at the scene.

PPD Detectives were called out to the scene to assist in the investigation.  Based on the investigation, PPD personnel determined the baby’s father was intoxicated and fell asleep on the baby, resulting in the baby’s death.  The father, identified as Paradise Resident Daniel Eastman (06/17/1999), was arrested and booked into Butte County Jail for the charges of 273a(a) PC (Child Abuse Resulting in Great Bodily Injury or Death) and 192(b) PC (Manslaughter).  Bail for Eastman was set at $80,000.000 dollars.

The investigation is ongoing, and the Department of Justice was called in to assist by processing the scene and collecting evidence.  An autopsy will be scheduled to assist in determining the exact cause of death.
