Red Flag Warning and Fire Prevention
What is a Red Flag Warning?
A red flag warning is a forecast warning issued by the National Weather Service in the United States to inform the public, firefighters, and land management agencies that conditions are ideal for wildfire combustion, and rapid spread. These include drought conditions or a dry season, very low humidity, high or erratic winds, and the possibility of lightning.
A few helpful reminders and Safety Tips for wildfire prevention:
Equipment Use Safety
- Mow or trim grass before 10 a.m, excluding mowing green lawns when it is not hot or windy, and never on a Red Flag Warning Day.
- Never use lawn mowers in dry vegetation.
Defensible Space
- Residents should make sure they have 100 feet of defensible space around structures free of dead weeds and vegetation.
- Remove combustible materials within 5 feet of all structures.
- Remove leaves and needles from roof and gutters.
- Trim branches 6 feet from the ground or 1/3rd the height of smaller trees.
Vehicle Safety
- Never pull over on dry grass.
- Ensure trailer chains do not drag on the ground.
- Keep proper tire pressure to avoid driving on the wheel rim.
Other
- Never burn landscape debris like leaves or branches on NO burn days. - Additional Burn Permit Information
- Make sure cigarette butts are extinguished properly.
- Report any suspicious activities to the Police Department.
